Let’s Move! Active Schools encourages schools to follow the Six Step Process to increase physical activity and get students moving more throughout the day. This process is a roadmap for schools. It outlines the steps you need to take to achieve your goal of increasing physical activity on campus and gives you the resources your school can use to achieve that goal.
As you start along the process toward an active school, you will see that each step builds on the last. Each step puts you in a better position to achieve your next goal. And then, after you have completed the six steps, you can start again, re-evaluate what worked and what didn’t, and continue increasing the opportunities for physical activity on your campus.
Your Six Steps
Step 1: Build Support
Get the right people on board to help you achieve success. These people will make up your school wellness council, your support team. You probably already know these people. They are the ones also passionate about increasing physical activity and improving wellness at your school.
Your school wellness council can be made up of parents, community members, teachers, school nurses, and anyone else who would like to see your efforts for health succeed. Involve your council in starting your Inventory and creating your action plan. You will all have different skills to bring to the table and can work as a team to get your students moving more.
Step 2: Assess your School
After you have built your support network, your school wellness council, your next step is to evaluate the current state of physical activity at your school. What are you already doing? Is there anything you can do better?
That’s where our Inventory comes in. Our Inventory is your online tool that lists items that will help your school increase physical activity. Your Inventory is a virtual assessment tool that asks specific questions to identify where your school currently stands on the road to being an active school. It gives you a starting point.
You will be able to check “yes” or “no” on each Inventory question, save it, and create a continuously up-to-date record to keep your wellness efforts on track.
Step 3: Develop Your Action Plan
By taking your Inventory, you have identified what needs to be done. Now it’s time to create a plan to achieve those things.
Your action plan is your to-do list. It highlights all the items you’ve marked “no” on in your Inventory. And just like your Inventory shows you where you are, your action plan shows you where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. It is an interactive online to-do list that allows you to select the items you want to tackle, gives you resources that will help you complete those items, and then let’s you check “yes” when you’re done and ready to move to the next item.
Step 4: Explore Resources
Each item in your action plan will come with resource recommendations that will help you achieve that specific item. But every school has different needs and may take different actions to complete the items on their action plans.
Our resource database includes quality resources and funding opportunities to help you take action You can search by a variety of ways to find the resources that will work best to increase physical activity at your school.
Step 5: Take Action
You’ve already identified what you have done and created a plan for what you need to do. Now it’s time to take the necessary actions to achieve those goals.
Step 6: Celebrate Successes
Every step you take and every goal you achieve toward creating and sustaining an active school should be celebrated. Celebrating your successes rewards you and your school wellness council for the great work you are doing. But more importantly, highlighting successes will help sustain momentum and motivate your team to continue increasing opportunities for physical activity on your campus.
Extend Your Program
Highlighting your success to increase physical activity on campus can be the fuel that keeps you and your team motivated to continue making healthy change.
After you achieve the items outlined on your Action Plan, you will be a Let’s Move! Active School. You will be able to confidently share about how physically active your campus is and how you have managed to work more movement into different areas of the school day.
You can always do more. There may be other wellness needs at your school like increasing healthier foods or improving health opportunities for your staff. You now know you can create healthy change. Keep up the good work and continue transforming your campus into a healthier environment. Learn more about the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and the Healthy Schools Program!
